Can the CFO put AI time savings in the board pack?

Otomat editorial · Revised 4 November 2026

Report released capacity as capacity. Move it into a financial benefit only when finance can trace a separate operating decision to a cost, cash flow or contribution change.

  • Follow one hour past the timesheet
  • Make the bridge survive a board question
  • Write the footnote before the headline

Follow one hour past the timesheet

Imagine a service desk that clears its queue earlier. The supervisor moves staff to overdue renewals. The faster queue is observable; payroll has not changed. Renewals may improve, but a reassignment alone tells the board nothing about retention or margin.

Ask the controller to follow the next event. Did overtime cease? Did an approved external invoice shrink? Did extra orders ship with positive contribution after fulfillment costs? These are different outcomes. Each needs its own source and observation window.

Make the bridge survive a board question

Put the old and new task volumes side by side. Separate normal cases from exceptions, apply the same quality test to both and include reviewer time. Then identify who changed the schedule, supplier commitment or sales process. Without that decision, stop at operational capacity.

Revenue contributionAdditional fulfilled work and its incremental marginA price change, sales campaign or seasonality may explain the difference.

Write the footnote before the headline

A usable board line reads: “Handling time fell in the observed queue. The team used the capacity to clear backlog. Finance has not recognized a cost reduction.” Date it and name the owner. Update the sentence when the evidence changes; keep the earlier version for comparison.
